Fines

Students can substitute a fine levied by the University for a Code of Conduction violation at a rate of $10 to 1 additional work sanction hour. Failure to pay a fine results in the fine being doubled and billed directly to a student’s account.

Study Abroad

Students cannot be on disciplinary or academic probation for any period of their study abroad experience. Common violations for students to get placed on disciplinary probation are: marijuana, disorderly conduct for off-campus noise, and second time alcohol violations.

Disorderly Conduct for off-campus noise violations

The off-campus penalties for noise are stricter for Georgetown students than they are for on-campus noise violations. Excessive noise is considered any noise beyond the property line. Quiet hours are between 10:00pm and 7:00am every night of the week. Students charged with an off-campus noise violation are charged with Disorderly Conduct, which carries potential sanctions of Disciplinary Probation for one semester, a six-week party restriction for the house where the excessive noise was found, and a fine. Students can reduce or dismiss the amount of time spent on Disciplinary Probation by completing Home Beyond the Hilltop.

Alcohol on campus

No person under the age of 21 is permitted to possess or drink alcohol on campus. Alcohol is not permitted in designated “alcohol-free locations” which include freshman dorms, and any university-owned residence where all of the occupants are under the age of 21. Open alcohol containers cannot be possessed or consumed in public areas except the following grilling areas: Henle Village, Village A, Alumni Square and LXR/Nevils. In these locations, 15 people may be present at these “informal” gatherings. Kegs are only permitted in university-owned apartments and townhouses where at least one occupant is 21 years old.

Freshmen Forgiveness policy

A freshman student is eligible for “Freshmen Forgiveness” if they are found responsible for an on-campus noise or possession/consumption of alcohol violation and the student meets the following criteria:

  • Committed the violations in their first year at Georgetown
  • Only committed one or multiple of the above violations and no other ones
  • Completed all sanctions on time
  • Does not commit another violation during their time at Georgetown

In this case, the student’s Disciplinary Record will be maintained as an Internal Record. Internal records cannot be shared with individuals outside Georgetown University, while Disciplinary Records can be shared upon written consent by the student.

**Note that for the 2021-2022 academic year, Sophomores are also included in the Freshmen Forgiveness policy (due to being off-campus for their Freshmen year).
